New NSU Institute of Medicine and Psychology Center Presented at Golden Valley Forum

The Institute of Medicine and Psychology (IMP) Educational and Scientific Center is one of the NSU new campus facilities being built as part of the “Science and Universities” National Project. Its construction will make it possible to train personnel in the pharmaceutical field, as well as to conduct research on the creation of new drugs and medical technologies. The Director of the NSU IMP, Professor Andrey Pokrovsky, presented this project to participants at the Golden Valley Research and Production Forum.

In 2003, NSU became the third classical university in the country to open a new medical department. The advantage of classical universities over specialized medical universities is the presence of qualified teachers in disciplines that are essential for the development of modern medicine such as genetics, molecular biology, chemistry, physics, and computer science.

Pokrovsky noted that, “Today our graduates have gained a positive reputation both in the country and abroad. Our graduates are in demand among medical facilities”. The high level of training is achieved, among other things, by the increased volume of teaching in the academic disciplines identified above and the fact that all students conduct qualifying research work as part of their studies.

One of the primary problems that has appeared over the years is the lack of available space for workshops that are a mandatory component of the training for a future doctor. It has been necessary to rent premises in various scientific SB RAS institutes and this significantly complicated the educational process and limited the opportunities for development of the medical field.

The solution to the problem will be the opening of a special Educational and Scientific Center at IMP as part of the second stage of facilities under construction for the new world-class NSU campus.

Pokrovsky emphasized.

With its commissioning, we plan to open training in two new specialties. The first is pharmaceuticals since it is important to develop this industry and launch the production of a wide range of domestic drugs. This requires more specialists. The second sphere is medical cybernetics where specialists in the field of digital medicine will be trained.

In addition, the Center will include a number of new laboratories where research will be conducted in molecular virology, medicinal chemistry, neuroscience, cellular technology, and other promising areas of medicine. The NSU IMP Director emphasized, “These technologies are the future and it is very important they become part of the overall research work at the University.”
