NSU V International Medical Tournament Ends

The Medical Tournament (MeDic House) is implemented by a group of students and graduates fr om NSU’s Institute of Medicine and Psychology (NSU IMP) with support from the Presidential Grants Fund. The project is a team competition among medical students to solve complex clinical problems based on real clinical practice.

Traditionally, the tournament consists of two stages: remote and the finals. More than 340 medical students (76 teams) from 40 universities, 35 cities and 8 countries (Russia, Germany, Poland, Serbia, Ireland, Albania, Montenegro, and the Republic of Belarus) took part in the initial remote stage. Twelve teams in the Russian-speaking league and 12 English-speaking teams passed through into the final round that took place in Novosibirsk.

More than 100 medical students and 90 experts from different Russian cities (Moscow, Ulyanovsk, Arkhangelsk, Yakutsk) took part in the finals. For the first time this year, the expert commission included doctors from Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Israel, and Azerbaijan. Another important innovation was an opening day quiz. The tournament organizers conducted it in the form of a popular science quest. The medical students were divided into different groups for the quest, which made it easier for them to get to know each other.

During the tournament, teams had to go through 13 tasks wh ere experts evaluated their knowledge in clinical disciplines and practical skills. The most spectacular task awaiting the medical students was the forensic medical examination station. An actor was “made up” based on instructions from a forensic expert. After inspecting the "body", the teams had 5 minutes to determine the cause of death. In addition, their skills at dressing a wound on models were checked for speed.

Alexander Kochergin, 5th year student at the Ulyanovsk State University Medical Department and member of the "Dream Doctor`s Team” shared his impressions of the tournament,

I was impressed by the event’s extremely high level of organization. An initiative group of students and graduates from the NSU Institute of Medicine and Psychology founded the tournament demonstrating that youth is not a hindrance to professionalism. The format of the contest is interesting; it gave us a chance to consider several tactics for managing patients within the framework of the assigned clinical task, based on real events. Personally, the tournament allowed me to take a broader look, beyond individual clinical disciplines, at healthcare overall. For this, I thank those who were involved in our training, and those who created an atmosphere of the celebration for the medical sciences in Novosibirsk.

Tasks for team members covered a wide range of medical specializations: dermatovenereology, therapy, surgery, gynecology, intensive care, and others. An interdisciplinary approach had to be applied even when focusing on a specific problem

Marek Viniartz, tournament participant from Poland and member of the Medical University of Lublin team, said,

All the tasks we had to solve were very complex and required clinical thinking and a little clinical intuition, which is also of great importance in our future work. The competition demonstrated that all countries participating had a very high level of medical knowledge, so we were happy to be in this honorable group.

The tournament organizers note that every year the event brings together more and more young doctors in the pursuit of experience, knowledge, and professionalism. In the first tournament, only teams from Russian medical universities participated. Today, the event is international with medical students coming from all over the world, and organizers coming up with more interesting challenges.

Veronika Markina, Assistant NSU IMP Surgical Diseases Section and one of the founders of the Medical Tournament, discussed the events evolution,

A team from Germany was invited to participate in the second tournament. In the course of the competition, the participants and experts gradually switched to English. So, we came up with the idea to divide the tournament into English-speaking and Russian-speaking leagues and the third medical tournament was officially international. Over the last couple of years, the tournament format has been developing thanks to feedback from participants and experts. This year there were more experts from other universities, and foreign experts, and an external expert review of the tournament tasks was introduced. The young tournament organizing committee, students at NSU IM, are full of ideas and the energy to implement them.

The results for the Russian language league were: 1st place = I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University, 2nd place = Kemerovo State Medical University, and 3rd place = St. Petersburg State University.

In the English-speaking league, the 1st place went to the team from Germany studying at the Charité, Universitätsmedizin Berlin, the 2nd place went to students at the Medical University of Lublin in Poland, and the 3rd place went to the Serbian team from the University of Belgrade.
