NSU Postgraduate Student Laureate First National “KOLBA” Prize for Female Scientists

Alla Gisich, a postgraduate student at the , was nominated for the First National KOLBA Prize for female scientists and specialists. Her work involves conducting experiments on erythrocytes, modeling their biophysics and programming to process the data. Gisich was named a 3rd degree laureate in the Physics category on April 21 in Moscow at the international "Women in Science and Technology - 2023" forum. 280 applications were submitted from 60 Russian cities and 4 CIS countries. 49 of the women became laureates.

Gisich discussed her award,

I received the award thanks to my scientific work and participation in projects. My research focuses on the detailed characterization of red blood cells. They are the main element in the oxygen supply chain of all body cells. Identifying their parameters for diagnostic purposes is an important task for the timely detection of medical pathologies. My focus is to expand the range of measured erythrocyte parameters and to isolate those that correlate with the presence of a particular disease. The 91Ƶ Department gave me a powerful base for conducting my research. I see that women have a growing interest in scientific activities. When I was just starting to study as an undergraduate, about 30% of those in my specialization were girls. It is very nice that now there are more and more opportunities and projects that support science.

KOLBA, the annual forum, and the First National Award for women from various fields of science and technology were designed to highlight and reward outstanding women scientists, share experience and knowledge, form successful role models for the future generation of women scientists, and find solutions to improve conditions for women in science, and strengthen the position of the scientific women's community.

The event was organized by the Russian Branch of the international "Women in Nuclear Russia" movement.  This was established in 2017 to consolidate and develop a professional community of women specialists in Russia who are working in various scientific fields, including the nuclear industry. The main mission of the "Women in the Nuclear Industry" is to inform and educate the public about the benefits and prospects for the development of nuclear and radiation technologies and to support the development of women's initiatives.
