— Why did you choose NSU? Did you consider other Russian universities?
I entered NSU on a government-sponsored exchange program. NSU is a university known for its engineering and natural sciences. I also considered Moscow State University, but NSU suits me more in terms of my specialization.
— Why did you choose to study Mathematics?
I have been very interested in mathematics since childhood and I want to connect my future with this science. Since mathematical education in Russia is highly valued in the world and many Chinese textbooks contain information from Russian sources, I decided to enter here.
— What are the pros and cons of studying at NSU?
I like that all the teachers here are professionals in their field. Also, studying in small groups allows me to better absorb the material and deepen my knowledge. In terms of minuses, the distance between the University and the city center is inconvenient for shopping.
— What did you find most difficult aspect of adapting to life in Russia?
The most difficult thing for me was the Russian language. When I first came to Russia, it was very difficult for me to interact with people. Also, as a Chinese woman, I prefer Chinese food and it is difficult for me to find food I am comfortable with in Russia.
— What helped you adapt? Were any NSU programs useful?
I attended special courses in Russian and spent a lot of time studying. I also participated in many events organized by the University that helped me improve my Russian language level.
— What events organized by the University did you take part in?
I attended the EthnoParty organized as part of this year's InterWeek and participated in sports competitions. I also attended concerts at the NSU music club such as InterPesnya and the Mayevka rock concert at Yunost.
— What is your impression of Russian students? How are they different from students in your country?
I think Russian students are very friendly, they always try to help us. Compared to Chinese students, Russians focus more on practical applications as opposed to theory. I also think Chinese students are more introverted.
— Have you made any friends among NSU students?
Yes, I have many Russian friends and I would like to continue communicating with them in the future. I also have relationships with other foreign students from such countries as Iran, Indonesia, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, Egypt.
— What would you like to do after graduation?
Now I am studying IT and programming languages intensively because in the future I would like to work for Huawei.
— What advice would you give to other international students who are considering getting an education in Russia?
First of all, it is good to learn Russian before entering. And, if possible, participate in events organized by the University to help you adapt.
